I've been looking for some nice traditional Christmas mugs for while and stumbled across these whilst browsing through Amazon. Spode is a well known English brand which originated from Stoke-on-Trent (The Potteries) over 200 years ago, oddly though, I've never actually seen this "Christmas Tree" design despite it's introduction back in 1938. Sadly, the original Spode factory shut down in 2008 after going into administration and was subsequently acquired by the Portmeirion group who then moved most of the production to Asia (they also modernized the logo in 2010). Apparently, some of the Spode collection is still produced at the Portmeirion factory in Stoke-on-Trent, but it appears that this particular collection is now made in China, and according to Portmeirion, these continue to be made with the "stringent quality and craftsmanship the Portmeirion group is known for". As expected, mine were indeed made in China, and I'm reasonably happy with the quality of these mugs. They're a great size, made from durable stoneware, seem well proportioned and have a perfectly applied design. I love the nostalgic look of the Christmas Tree and I honestly love the Peppermint (or Candy Cane) handle, as it gives it additional character and an extra festive feel. These generally look traditional without looking too old-fashioned which is exactly what I wanted. On closer inspection, there's a couple of things to be aware of. Firstly, a couple of my mugs have very minor blistering which you can't really see, but probably wouldn't have been there had these been the original English made Spode. Secondly, I noticed that the printing look more like stickers, so I assume they're using dry "Heat Release Decals" which are applied onglaze by machines, rather than the original underglaze printing (1938 - 1962) or waterslide onglaze (1962 - 2008). Heat Release Decals generally makes production quicker and cheaper, so with this in mind along with the slight imperfections, it does appear that these do not mirror the quality of the original and seem a touch overpriced. Luckily, I purchased these at a reduced rate, so I'm happy. They have also received quite a few compliments from visitors and my sister-in-law instantly bought them, so I would happily recommend them.

Bought these mugs for my wife because she loves the Christmas and enjoys drinking her morning coffee in seasonal mugs lol. They are excellent quality and the handles don't get hot when you heat them in the microwave. They are beautifully decorated too. A little expensive but worth it since I plan on keeping these for many years to come. Would consider buying more of this brand's items.
